U.S. House of Representatives Rejects Trump’s Canada Tariffs

(MENAFN) In a stunning rebuke, the US House of Representatives delivered a 219–211 verdict Wednesday blocking President Donald Trump's levies on Canada, with half a dozen Republicans breaking party lines to align with nearly unanimous Democratic opposition against a cornerstone of his trade strategy.

The Democratic-sponsored measure prevailed in the chamber vote.

Yet the resolution carries primarily symbolic weight—the president retains veto power should the Senate advance it, and Wednesday's tally fell short of the supermajority needed to override such action.

Last year witnessed the Senate twice rejecting Trump's Canada tariff proposals, with four Republicans crossing the aisle alongside Democrats to advance those measures.

Wednesday's outcome arrived one day after Republican Reps. Kevin Kiley of California, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, and Don Bacon of Nebraska joined Democrats Tuesday in defeating a procedural maneuver designed to block lawmakers from challenging the president's sweeping tariffs through July.

House Republican leadership spent months suppressing attempts to force tariff authority votes, though the prohibition on challenging the duties lapsed this January.

Republican Reps. Dan Newhouse of Washington, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Jeff Hurd of Colorado—alongside Kiley, Massie, and Bacon—defied the president in Wednesday's ballot, a decision potentially fraught with political ramifications ahead of November's midterm contests.

Hours later, Trump issued a warning via his Truth Social platform targeting dissenting legislators, declaring they will "seriously suffer the consequences come Election time."

"Our Trade Deficit has been reduced by 78%, the Dow Jones has just hit 50,000, and the S&P, 7,000, all Numbers that were considered IMPOSSIBLE just one year ago. In addition, TARIFFS have given us Great National Security because the mere mention of the word has Countries agreeing to our strongest wishes," he said.

"TARIFFS have given us Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege," he added.

In a subsequent post, Trump charged that Canada "has taken advantage of the United States on Trade for many years."

"They are among the worst in the World to deal with, especially as it relates to our Northern Border. TARIFFS make a WIN for us, EASY. Republicans must keep it that way!"
